The Musical Originals Singers
Our award winning senior choir is the main public face of Musical Originals. The Musical Originals Singers have gained a reputation for specialising in contemporary music – particularly works written during the life-time of the choir members. They sing almost entirely ‘a capella’. The Choir performs at many events in Jersey including the important annual Liberation Day celebrations that mark the anniversary of the surrender in 1945 of the German forces that had occupied the Island for five years. In 2008, the Choir toured Madeira as guests of the Madeiran government, on the occasion of the ‘twinning’ of the islands’ two capitals, St Helier and Funchal.
Usually comprising 20-24 girls with an average of about 14, the Choir competes regularly in the annual Jersey Eisteddfod (one of Britain’s ‘top five’), winning ‘Platinum’ awards in each of the last three years. In October 2008 the Musical Originals Singers won the Youth Choir Class in the International Choir Festival of Jersey and, in March 2009, the Choir won the Children’s Choir section at ‘Young Prague 2009’ earning a Gold Award. Whilst in Prague, they also gave a concert in the historic St Nicholas Church in the Old Town Square.
Following its success in Prague, in October 2009, the choir was invited to compete in the Rimini International Choral competition in Italy. The 12 teenage ‘Musical Originals’ who travelled to Italy came 5th out of 16 in the Chamber Choir section with a Silver Award. They were the only youth choir in the section, competing against university students and adults. Later that month, the Musical Originals Singers had the opportunity to meet and share a concert with the ‘All Angels’ and ‘Blue’. They have also sung with Hayley Westenra and Nerina Pallot.
In 2010 the Musical Originals Singers competed in the BBC Choir of the Year of the competition and, out of 230 choirs competing, were one of only 14 to be awarded a ‘Choir of the Day’. In July 2011 they, and the Musical Originals Training Choir, will compete in Llangollen International Eisteddfod and in October, the International Choir Festival of Jersey.
